This layer is representation of the permeable and impermeable surfaces within the main Dunedin Urban area and Mosgiel. An impermeable surface is a surface through which water cannot pass and that sheds water, the opposite is true for a permeable surface. The latest aerial imagery of Dunedin City was used to categorise the urban land cover into two classes: land covered by vegetation, which was considered permeable and land not covered by vegetation, which was considered impermeable. This was done using a tool in a Geographic Information System (GIS) that allows aerial photographs to be classified into different categories depending on the combination of the red, green, blue and near-infrared wavelengths that are reflected by an object. While many structures in an urban landscape will reflect different combinations of red, green, and blue light, healthy vegetation will also reflect near-infrared light which, while invisible to humans, is visible to the cameras used for aerial photography.
Aerial photography captured 2018-2019. |
